Restorative Justice California

Transform the lives of those impacted by crime and the criminal justice system.

Our Vision

To be the model of Restorative Justice Services in California and beyond.

Who We Are

Restorative Justice California (RJC) is a non-profit 501 c 3, non-governmental organization, that works in partnership with local justice sector agencies and other nonprofit organizations in Southern California to provide programs and training that promote the values of respect, responsibility, and relationships.

RJC is based in San Diego, CA.

RJC was founded in 1993 as the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program of San Diego County. It began as a faith-based organization started by Pearl Hartz, a retired school teacher and member of the Menonnite community.

The organization’s name was changed in 2006 to the Restorative Justice Mediation program (RJMP) and in 2024 to Restorative Justice California to reflect the broader scope of the Restorative Justice practices it is involved in. Its identification as a faith-based organization was also changed in 2006, becoming a secular one.

What We Do

RJC’s programs provide opportunities for crime victims, survivors, those who have caused harm, and community members to engage in practical, life-changing processes that improve their lives and futures.

RJC envisions a day when all parties to crimes in every community are offered the opportunity to engage in making justice a restorative, healing process by effectively addressing the harms, needs, and obligations of the parties involved through restorative practices.

RJC programs and services are free of charge and confidential. We are funded by a variety of grants and private donations from people who believe in and support our vision and work.

A Powerful Approach to Justice

Restorative Justice is a non-adversarial, non-retributive approach to justice that focuses on repairing the harm, while engaging individuals and community members in the process.
